The (Broken) Political System Of America
Jan 3rd
There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.
John Adams (October 2, 1780)
If ever there was a night to write about the American political system, tonight seems most appropriate, as little Iowans everywhere wait in anticipation for their caucus votes to be tallied in what ultimately begins an 8-month shitstorm leading up to the 2012 Presidential election. I by no means consider myself any sort of expert on our political system, although it greatly interests me. However, I have gotten completely fed up with the ridiculousness and lies being constantly spewed from every direction. It’s time for me to voice my opinion.
The bi-partisan nature of our political system has completely shattered the idea of the cohesive democracy we’ve all been taught America possesses. Not for decades has our nation stood as one, but instead we do everything we can to separate all issues – be they moral, economical, social, whatever – into black and white; Democrat vs Republican, Left-wing vs Right-wing, Liberal vs Conservative. The notion that such complex issues as tax increases and supplemental assistance programs can be split into two opposing sides is completely ludicrous.
I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all.
Thomas Jefferson (March 13, 1789)
Politicians are elected by their constituents to serve the needs of their constituents, not to serve the “goals” of their respective political party. Straight-ticket voting, both by politicians and citizens, is the most asinine modus operandi and is completely destroying our political system. There is absolutely no way you can convince me someone agrees with 100% of the other members of their party and disagrees with 100% of the members of the opposing party; it is impossible to even consider for a second that a politician is representing the views and needs of their constituents when they continue to engage in this never-ending quarrel against “the other guys.”
Helping to perpetuate this utter nonsense, the media and our “news” organizations have shattered any chance of cooperation. Fox News, who laughably consider themselves un-biased, run constant libelous smear attacks against any Democrat, especially our President. Similarly, CNN and MSNBC and the other “left-wing media” campaign in ceaseless warfare against all Republicans. Viewers have divided into corresponding factions, spreading disinformation like wildfire amongst their troops. Anytime unseemly (and typically anonymous) details about politician come out, they are quick to blame it on the “gotcha questions” of the “liberal media” or the “conservative media” like there is a divided America out to get them; the sad reality is that this dissolution is becoming more and more of a reality. Our mainstream media sells entertainment and gossip, neatly packaged and labeled as political opinions and news. It’s disgusting.
I was a no party man myself, and the first wish of my heart was, if parties did exist, to reconcile them.
George Washington (July 6, 1796)
Thirty seconds looking at the comments section of any political website is all you need to realize how sickeningly disillusioned so many Americans have become. Commenters are split into one of two demographics, liberals or conservatives. Based on the stories and comments bolstered by these festering communities, one would have no choice but to assume that every “libtard” is a leach upon society hell-bent on sucking every penny from the middle and upper classes by raising taxes and growing the government, and every Republican is a corrupt thief extracting as much wealth out of the country as they can while lining their pockets on the broken dreams of the 99%. Not to mention, the atrocious grammar and spelling by all sides as they accuse the other of running this country into the ground.
I have never, and probably never will, registered with any political party. There are many things I agree with and disagree with in each party, and to commit myself to one goes against everything I believe, not that I have any issue with someone registered one way or the other. I do, however, take extreme issue with people who align themselves completely with a particular side. Never in a million years will you convince me that the best candidate in this upcoming election is “anyone but Obama” – if that’s your mentality, I’m sorry, but I think you’re a complete disgrace. It is absolutely unfathomable that while we are still months away from having any idea as to who will be running against our President in this upcoming election, millions of people have already declared that they will vote for whoever runs against our “socialist, Marxist, Kenyan, Muslim, illegally-elected, non-citizen President.” On second thought, especially considering I live in the redneck Bible Belt, it’s not surprising at all. I have no clue who I will be voting for in this next election – I’m extremely dissatisfied with the broken promises and forsaken liberties that the Obama administration has produced over the past 3 years – but until the candidates and their platforms are announced, I will reserve my opinion.
The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls. They got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying. Lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I’ll tell you what they don’t want. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking.
George Carlin (November 5, 2005)
Lastly in this little rant of mine, I sometimes just want to crawl in a hole and never return when I think about the corruption and sheer admiration for a complete lack of intelligence that is so proudly displayed by politicians. Sure, Washington and corporate America have always had their hands in each other’s pockets, but it is wildly out of control. Thanks to the wonderful Citizens United ruling in 2010, Corporate Personhood had allowed corporations to make unlimited contributions to various politicians in order to advance their causes. After all, corporations are people, and money is free speech. I’m sorry, but this is entirely fucked up beyond comprehension. I am all for corporations being able to fight for their rights in Washington and fully support capitalism and the ability to earn money. However, I find it reprehensible that the Supreme Court has declared that because a corporation has more money than me, they are entitled to an entirely different set of rules; a game in which politicians gamble with the rights and livelihood of ordinary citizens in order to get rich quick.
Just take a look at the recent pieces of legislation, SOPA and Protect IP, which would effectively destroy the internet as you know it. In fact, if these bills were to pass, this website would probably be blocked to all American viewers. Crafted by members of the largest media corporations and members of Congress under the guise of “stopping online piracy,” these bills are opposed by nearly every company that deals with technology on a regular basis; Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter – You know, those companies that basically facilitate your entire means of communication anymore. For sake of proving my point, two of the main Congressional staffers who have helped pushed these bills through, Allison Halataei and Lauren Pastarnack, left their respective positions in the past few weeks to work as lobbyists for the MPAA and NMPA. After fighting for these organizations in Congress in order to destroy the internet, both of these staffers left to go work directly for these organizations.
I’d really like to tackle the categorical corruption and hypocrisy that is the Evangelical right-wing in politics right now, but I’ll save that for another post and another night. Let me just state that the United States absolutely was not established as a Christian nation, and the perception by many that their beliefs should trump the civil liberties of all citizens is entirely inadmissible. I’ll end this with somewhat of a plea, however: our country desperately needs a viable third party. Hell, it could use a strong fourth, fifth and sixth party while we’re at it. Bi-partisanship has destroyed America’s foundation and will ultimately lead to the desecration of everything this beautiful country of ours once stood for. Read about the issues from numerous sources, listen to opposing viewpoints, and please – for the love of God – start forming your own opinions.
Astronautalis – Two Years Before The Mast
Jan 3rd
For most reading this, Astronautalis will be a completely new name to you, although he is a fantastic artist who has been making a solid name for himself for years. Fresh out of his twenties, Charles Bothwell has released four albums and a multitude of EPs over the years, full of quality quirky hip-hop that completely transcends any genre boundaries. While I was driving to work this morning, one of his older tracks come up on WKNC – the greatest radio station in the world if you’re lucky enough to live within 50 or so miles of NC State; quite frankly the best thing about that damn school – and it brought me back to the first time I heard his music. I figured why not start of the New Year with some new sounds for everyone. Be sure to check out his website for some truly unique and stellar music, as well as his blog, which is filled with some great photos he takes through Instagram. This track also features uncredited vocals from Sarah Jaffe, a fantastic folk artist in her own right.
Cee-Lo Green – Cry Baby x Gettin’ Grown [music videos]
Aug 8th
“Cry Baby” was a great song off Cee-Lo’s The Lady Killer in itself, but after the history of Mr. Green’s crazy-ass music videos it was pretty much inevitable that something funky would be coming. Now the official video has dropped and it features none other than.. Urkel.. Steve fucking Urkel. Or to be exact, Jaleel White, not that anyone remembers him for much of anything besides his character on Family Matters. He looks dressed kinda how LeBron and D.Wade showed off their style before games; plaid pants, cardigan, tie – the whole shebang. Somehow this all fits in completely appropriately with the feel of the entire song, Jaleel has still got some acting chops in him.
I feel like I can’t post a video from Cee-Lo without throwing this vintage bag-of-crazy out there, the music video for “Gettin’ Grown”. This is just proof Mr. Green has always been really out there; Goodie Mob was all a façade.
Miles Fisher – New Romance x This Must Be The Place [music videos]
Aug 7th
Oh.. my.. God.. this is the best music video.. EVER! Seriously, I have never seen a music video that contains this amount of awesome in one place. Shit, I’m at a loss for words every time I watch this video and try to describe how hilarious, reminiscent and brilliant it is. The nostalgia brought by this music video is beyond measurable.. how the hell did Miles Fisher shoot this in what looks like an exact recreation of the sets from Saved By The Bell, the best show ever on TBS re-runs after school in first grade? Apparently the cast of this video, including Mr. Fisher, is in the upcoming Final Destination 5, which would explain the gruesome deaths occurring throughout. So I guess, for sake of accuracy and clarity, I should call this the best viral ad/music video ever. Either way, I’ve been replaying it non-stop since I first saw it a few days ago via Jezebel (don’t hate, it was actually via a Gizmodo post).
As a bonus, here’s another music video from Miles Fisher from a couple years back, covering The Talking Head’s classic “This Must Be The Place” but paying hilarious homage to American Psycho, the cult classic horror thriller.
Mitch-Mash – Second Wave
Aug 7th

Another Raleigh native, Mitch-Mash has been hit-or-miss for me on a lot of his mash-ups. Then I played his newest track and Killer Reese One jumped in. Fuck, you win, Mitch-Mash, I’m sold. Pretty much any mix of King Fantastic is a guaranteed winner for me, being as the LA-duo may be my favorite in the game right now. There is absolutely no wrong they can do, but this is the best use of the “On Q” acapella to date. I don’t know why more remixes haven’t come out yet, for those of you not in the know, King Fantastic has all of their instrumentals, acapellas, stems and DJ packs available for purchase at incredibly low prices on their site. Also, be sure to check out Mitch-Mash’s Facebook and SoundCloud as well as a fantastic recent interview with Killer Reese and Troublemaker in the Los Angeles Times.
Skizzy Mars – Tara x Upper West – Dream Big (Feat. Skizzy Mars)
Aug 7th

Skizzy Mars came from way outta left-field and has completely killed it since crashing onto the scene with just a few tracks. Produced by David Yassky, who also produced Skizzy’s first hit, “Douchebag”, “Tara” has such an upbeat feeling, complemented by No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” samples mixed throughout. No matter what the subject, Skizzy just has a way of coming across with such an ‘I-don’t-give-a-fuck attitude that perfectly plays off his persona.
Teaming up with their fellow Brooklynite, Upper West is back with another hit in “Dream Big”. Skizzy makes a very welcome guest appearance, fitting in snug with the poppy instrumental and airy synths. “I guess we’re just kids with big dreams” is such a perfect line to describe this impending wave of young self-made hip-hop stars.

Tim Gunter – Adderall (Feat. Kreayshawn)
Aug 7th

What an absolutely perfect name for this remix, I feel like Adderall is the only cure to sorting out the mayhem of this track, that damn cat gets me every time even though I know it’s coming. Kreayshawn is such an interesting phenomenon to me, there is nothing about her that makes sense in being a hip-hop artist, from being a completely white – in every sense of the word – girl, to pouring out what has to be the most obviously generic and plain ridiculous rhymes; somehow everything comes together though and she pulls it off. Tim Gunter’s Dance To This, Vol. 2 comes out soon, I can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us, if this is just the beginning.
Dveloped – Bustin’ Scary Rhymes
Aug 7th

After Dveloped sent me the instrumental to this track, I was completely hooked, no matter what he was going to add on top. Every song he puts together is like reliving the best parts of my childhood (Which, by the way, the 90s were 100% hands-down the single greatest decade ever to grow up in – If anyone wants to argue differently, I’m sorry you grew up in a shittier time). Bonecrusher’s “Never Scared” provides such a great backdrop to Busta’s rhymes, with tons of hidden samples featuring the likes of The Offspring, Ludacris and more. Word on the street is the next track from Dveloped is going to completely blow your mind.
Bassnectar – Above & Beyond (Feat. Seth Drake)
Aug 7th

The newest album from Bassnectar, Divergent Spectrum, dropped last week but he decided to grace us all with a single to help you pry that wallet open and buy some music for once. Well worth it. “Above & Beyond” is chalk full of some serious wobbles and bass, but I’m quite partial to the piano interludes. I’m in awe as to how much form the best dubstep artists can give to their sound; so much dubstep is incredibly amateurish and contains a lot of misplaced and unnecessary fluctuations. Bassnectar, among others, has seemingly learned to tame this beast and domesticate it in ways previously unfathomed. Grab the whole album, in whichever package you’d like, from here.
